What We Believe

What We Believe

Who we are

Cornerstone Baptist Church functions as an independent Baptist church, fundamental in our doctrine and position, and traditional in our worship.  We sing the traditional hymns of the faith, which are rich in truth, meaning, and reverence for God’s name. We believe that worship is about God and about exalting the Lord Jesus Christ.  Our desire is that our lives and our church may bring glory to Him.

What we Believe

Statement of Faith

The following Statement of Faith is a summary of the doctrines held by Cornerstone Baptist Church, which are based upon the Word of God.

The Scriptures

We believe in the literal, verbal inspiration of the 66 books of the Bible, comprised of the Old and New Testaments. The Bible is the inerrant, inspired Word of God, divinely given; and is our final authority in all matters of faith and practice. For reasons of textual reliability and for unity within our church in our preaching and teaching, it is our practice to use only the King James version of the Bible.

The Godhead

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three Persons – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The Person and Work of Jesus Christ

We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternally existing Person of God the Son; Who became man without ceasing to be God. He was born of a virgin and is fully God and fully man. He lived a sinless life upon this earth that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man. This redemption was accomplished by His death on the cross. His literal, physical resurrection from the dead makes sure this redemption. Jesus ascended to Heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God the Father.

The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity. He works in the sinner, reproving or convicting of sin, righteousness, and judgment. He sanctifies the believer, and indwells and seals every child of God permanently.

The Fall of Man

We believe that mankind was created in the image of God, but fell through sin, by voluntarily disobeying God. This fall brought about physical death and spiritual death (eternal separation from God). As a result of the fall of man, all of mankind exists as a fallen race, born with a sinful nature, which is predisposed toward sin. All mankind has sinned, and as a result, is under the just and holy condemnation of God.

The Devil

We believe in a literal devil, who was once a holy angel created by God; but who fell through pride and rebellion against God. The devil, or Satan, is the tempter and is called in Scripture the prince of this world. He will be judged by God and will be eternally punished.

The Way of Salvation

We believe that Salvation is the gift of God, purchased through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Salvation is received through repentance and faith, and in no way can a person merit or earn their salvation. The price for salvation was paid in full by Jesus Christ. In order to be saved, an individual must receive Christ personally. When a person receives Jesus Christ by faith, he is born again by the Holy Spirit and becomes a child of God, eternally secure.

The Church

We believe that a New Testament Baptist Church is a local, autonomous body of Christ. The church is an assembly that meets to glorify Jesus Christ and for the purposes of evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, and worship. Baptism by immersion and the Lord’s supper are the only two ordinances of the church. Pastor and deacons are the only valid offices.

Biblical Separation

We believe that all believers should honour the Lord through a holy life that is separated from the world’s philosophies and practices.

As a church assembly, we deem it necessary to separate from unscriptural movements such as hyper-Calvinism, the Ecumenical movement, the Charismatic movement, and Neo Orthodoxy. We are not part of the New IFB Movement.

End Times Events

We believe in “the blessed hope” – the imminent appearing of Jesus Christ to rapture all believers home to Heaven. Following this, the world will enter a literal Tribulation period which will climax in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ to this earth to set up His kingdom and millennial reign.

The Eternal State of the Righteous and the Wicked

We believe in a literal Heaven and a literal hell. The redeemed will spend eternity with God in Heaven, while the lost will spend eternity separated from God in everlasting punishment.
